Skin Malignancy is the term for skin cancers which affect more than 100,000 people in the UK every year. The most common form is non melanoma with melanoma being rarer and more serious.
The cancer normally starts as a lump or discoloured patch of skin but then grows. These tumours are more prevalent on skin that has been exposed to the sun so often occur on the face and they are the most common of all cancers.
They rarely spread beyond the face and can be removed with a simple operation but other treatments such as cryotherapy, which freezes off the growth, or photodynamic therapy, which degrades it with an intense light source, are available.
Melanoma is the most serious skin cancer and it frequently develops in a mole or suddenly appears as a new, dark spot on the skin. It is advisable to seek medical help if you have a lump, ulcer, lesion or skin discolouration which does not clear up in a month because early diagnosis and treatment are vital in all skin cancers.
A medical examination and biopsy will determine the tumour’s properties and around 75% are basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas the next highest form – both are caused by the abnormal growth of skin cells.

If you are self-paying you don’t need a referral from your GP for a consultation. You can simply refer yourself* and book an appointment.
If you have health insurance (e.g. Bupa, Axa Health, Aviva), you will need to contact your insurer to get authorisation before any treatment, and in most cases you will also require a referral letter from your GP.
If you are not registered with a GP, we have an in-house private GP practice you can use. Alternatively, we can suggest the most appropriate course of action for you to take, given your location and individual circumstances.
*Please note – for investigations such as X-rays and MRIs, a referral will be required. However, we may be able to arrange this for you through our on-site private GP.
