Genioplasty is the medical term for chin surgery to correct the balance of bones in the face and jaw. It is used to improve the appearance of a chin that is set too far back or is too prominent.
The Genioplasty is carried out under general anaesthesia and involves incisions being made in the mouth so there is no visible scarring. X-rays will allow surgeons to check lower teeth roots and calculate the exact amount of reshaping needed.
The surgical team access the lower jaw bone and chin and perform a controlled break so it can be cut and manipulated into a new, improved position. Small metal plates and screws hold the revised bone structure in place.
The procedure takes around 90 minutes, depending on its complexity, and recovery times are rapid providing good after-care protocol is followed. Pain and discomfort subside after a week and patients can go back to their normal daily activities after that, although sporting activities are not advised for a few months.
The goal is to create a natural looking chin but the final results may take six weeks or more to be achieved.
A misaligned chin can cause significant psychological concerns, particularly in adolescents and young people. Pre-operative consultations are important as they allow discussion of the final aesthetics. The operation is highly effective and returning the chin to a symmetry to restore self-confidence and improve function.

If you have health insurance (e.g. Bupa, Axa Health, Aviva), you will need to contact your insurer to get authorisation before any treatment, and in most cases you will also require a referral letter from your GP.
If you are not registered with a GP, we have an in-house private GP practice you can use. Alternatively, we can suggest the most appropriate course of action for you to take, given your location and individual circumstances.
*Please note – for investigations such as X-rays and MRIs, a referral will be required. However, we may be able to arrange this for you through our on-site private GP.
