Ultrasound Services
The Imaging Department has two high-resolution Philips “iU22” colour Doppler ultrasound systems with an extensive selection of probes allowing us to offer a full range of general and specialised ultrasound studies. In addition, obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound services are also provided using a GE Voluson colour Doppler ultrasound scanner based in the Outpatient Department.
Special purpose ‘small parts’ and ‘intercavity’ probes are used to perform detailed examinations of the head and neck, thyroid gland, testes, prostate gland, breast and female pelvic organs.
Ultrasound is also used to examine the tendons, muscles and soft tissues of the major joints and as a guide for steroid injections into joints and surrounding soft tissues as an effective treatment for painful joints.
This equipment is additionally used to provide guidance for biopsy, aspiration and drainage procedures.
Consultant Radiologists or Specialist Sonographers carry out all ultrasound examinations and results are usually dispatched on the day of examination.
