Physiotherapy FAQs

Physiotherapy works to treat of physical conditions with the aim of regaining full movement and function  by reducing pain and improving stability and strength. For questions relating to your appointment and what to expect you can read our frequently asked questions detailed below or call/email us and speak to a member of our dedicated team.

How can physiotherapy help me?

Physiotherapists are able to treat a range of conditions. At the Physiotherapy Unit our specialists are experts in treating injuries or conditions affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and nerves. This includes a specialist service relating to spinal problems, sports injuries and rehabilitation following a stroke or post surgery.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No – If you are a self paying patient you do not need a referral from your GP you can book an appointment with us directly.

However, most patients are referred to us by their GP or another medical specialist as a referral letter is often needed before an appointment can be confirmed. If you do not have a GP, we may be able to assist you by suggesting the most appropriate course of action for you to take, given your location and individual circumstance. If you have medical insurance (e.g. Bupa, Axa PPP, Aviva), you will need to contact your insurer to get authorisation for any treatment and, in most cases, you will require a referral letter from your GP.

 

How long are treatment sessions

Your first appointment will last up to one hour. In this session we will take the history of your condition as well as undertake a thorough physical examination of the problem. If you have any questions we will be sure to answer them and fully explain treatment plans that are considered.

How many sessions will I need?

All conditions are treated on an individual basis as your symptoms will depend on how many treatments you require. We will discuss this with you in your first consultation and do our best to provide a timetable for you. In certain cases patients only require a small number of sessions as we provide home exercise regimes and encourage self management.

Can I choose which physiotherapist I see?

Yes – Our specialist team includes both male and female physiotherapists with many years of experience. If you prefer to continue your treatment with a particular physiotherapist then you can request them and we will do our best to accommodate.

How do I cancel my appointment?

The Unit has a 24 hour Cancellation Policy. if you need to cancel / re-arrange any appointments, we request that you please give us a minimum of 24 hours’ notice. We do appreciate that sometimes this is not realistic and will try to be sympathetic to your situation. Failing this, a cancellation charge may apply.

You may cancel your appointment by calling the Physiotherapy Unit on 0207 806 4010, please leave a message if the lines are busy or it is out of hours, we will acknowledge your cancellation. alternatively, you can email to cancel the appointment.

Late cancellation charge or if I miss my appointment and don't give 24hrs notice

The full appointment charge will be levied if you do not attend your appointment or less than 24 hours notice is given to cancel your appointment. if you arrive over 15 minutes late for your appointment you may not be seen, but may be charged for your appointment.

Session treatment times to include note writing, letters and exercise programme

Your appointment may include some non face-to-face time with your therapist. This is to enable them to write up your session, send update reports to your referrer, collate and send you a home exercise programme.If you have any questions regarding your appointment, please ask your therapist.

Which insurance companies are you registered with?

We are registered with all the major insurance companies. For information on other providers you can call us on 020 7806 4010 or email us at physiotherapy@hje.org.uk

I have seen a Consultant and had a scan/ X-ray. Do you need to see the results?

It is useful for us to have as much information as possible, so our team can fully understand your injury/condition. Normally, your Consultant or GP would write to us after your consultation, however, if this has not been done, you can request a letter from them.

What should I wear to my appointment?

This really depends on the nature of the injury/condition. For example, if we are treating your ankle, it would be best to arrive in shorts. However, if you are unsure, please feel free contact us and we can advise you on the best solution.

Do you offer disabled access?

Yes – The Physiotherapy Unit provides disabled access throughout St John & St Elizabeth Hospital.
