Consultant Biography
Prof Rakhit qualified from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School (Imperial College London) with a first class honours intercalated degree in pharmacology. He completed postgraduate training in cardiology and general medicine at Hammersmith, Royal Brompton and St. Marys Hospitals obtaining his CCT in 2003. During registrar training he was a Wellcome clinical research fellow completing his MD thesis at the Rayne Institute St.Thomas` Hospital (Kings College London) on the role of nitric oxide in ischaemic pre-conditioning. He was British Heart Foundation International Fellow at the Swiss Cardiovascular Centre, Bern between 2001 and 2002 completing an advanced clinical and research fellowship in interventional cardiology.
As a senior consultant he was clinical director of cardiology at the Royal Free for a decade whilst contributing significantly to service transformation including setting up one of the UKs first direct access 24/7 Heart Attack Centres. He is currently divisional director of Cardiovascular Services at the Royal Free. He combines clinical work with teaching and research within UCL having supervised a number of MD and PhD fellows. In 2020 he was promoted to Honorary Professor of Cardiology at the Institute of Cardiovascular Science, UCL. His research interests include the role of microparticles in coronary disease, intra-coronary imaging and coronary artery disease in high- risk individuals (diabetes, Familial Hyperlipidemia and HIV).
