Consultant Biography

Mr Carlos Cobiella grew up in Spain where he went to Medical School. He graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1989 and started his surgical training there. He moved to London in 1992 and continued his Basic Surgical Training in several Teaching Hospitals in the London area.

In 1996 he gained access to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Specialist Training Programme in Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery. That gave him a chance to train at the Shoulder Unit under the guidance of Messrs Ian Bailey, Paul Calvert and Simon Lambert and also at the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit with Professors Birch and Carlstedt.

Mr Cobiella was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an Upper Limb interest at the Whittington Hospital in 2003. He moved to University College Hospital in 2005 to develop his academic interest and has led the expansion of the Upper Limb Unit, now consisting of four Shoulder & Elbow and three Hand Surgeons. He supervises the training of medical students, orthopaedic surgeons in training and a Fellow specialising in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. He continues to publish within his field.

Mr Carlos Cobiella is the Upper Limb lead at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health, where he supervises training for MSc students. He was part of the London 2012 British Olympic Medical Team and regularly treats high level athletes. He is the Upper Limb Surgeon for the NFL in Europe.
