The Earl of Gainsborough, 1923 to 2009

With the death of Lord Gainsborough on December 29th at the age of 86 The Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth has lost a firm friend and wise counsellor who had served as both its Chairman and President.

Lord Gainsborough’s involvement with John & Lizzie went back to the 1950’s and in 1970 he was appointed Chairman , a position he held for ten years.

As a senior member of the Order Of Malta, of which he was President of the British Association from 1968 to 1974 , he was able to nurture the long standing link between the Hospital and the Order.

Having retired from being Chairman of the Hospital he returned as President in 1995 , a position he held until his death.

His insight into the issues facing both the Hospital and the Hospice operating in the Charitable Sector and having a strong religious tradition was all the more valuable through the knowledge and experience Lord Gainsborough brought from his founding in 1985 and his subsequent  involvement with The Hospital Management Trust whose objectives are to promote the services of charitable and religious hospitals and care homes . Among his other interests was local government and in the 1960’s he was President of the Rural District Councils’ Association .A devoted family man he was father of four sons and three daughters.

The many members of staff , benefactors and trustees of John  & Lizzie who knew Lord Gainsborough will remember someone who was astute , well informed ,unfailingly courteous ,not remotely solemn and with a twinkle in his eye. He was always generous with his time and rarely missed a meeting . The last Board Meeting he attended was in early November.

During the time of his involvement he witnessed and participated in many changes among them far reaching developments in the delivery of care and the foundation of St John’s Hospice . The success with which the Hospital embraced these changes while maintaining the highest standards of Care in a sympathetic and friendly environment owes much to Lord Gainsborough although he, characteristically, would not himself have taken any of the credit. He will be greatly missed.
