Falls & Blackout Clinic

Falls and blackouts are very common problems affecting a wide range of patients and constitute considerable cost to health services. Most blackouts are cardiac in origin and often the result of vaso-vagal syndrome or a primary arrhythmia – other cardiac causes also play a role including valvular complications, inherited syndromes and structural heart disease.

Although a cardiac aetiology is the most common, there are many neurological causes for blackouts and syncope. Epilepsy and TIAs are probably the most common causes of blackouts with neurological origin.

The aim of this rapid access clinic is to provide a fast track service where GPs can directly refer a patient to HJE for a one stop evaluation in cases where a patient has experienced falls, pre-syncope, syncope and blackouts (transient loss of consciousness). Please refer to flow chart for the Care Pathways. This service links in with Cardiology, Neurology and the Falls Management Programme.
