Podiatry and Podiatric Surgery

podiatry

Podiatry and Podiatric Surgery are the fields of healthcare specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot and ankle and aspects of the lower limbs.

Podiatry

A Podiatrist has specialist training to diagnose and treat all aspects of foot pathology as an independent practitioner.

Podiatrists at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth usually work in partnership with consultant orthopaedic surgeons or through the physiotherapy department.  They ensure each patient is thoroughly assessed, diagnosed and optimum treatment is selected.

Initial consultations are often with our orthopaedic surgeons, although patients can ask for a referral straight to a podiatrist to undertake a clinical assessment.

In some cases, conservative treatment by a podiatrist may be effective without surgery. Many foot and ankle problems are stress injuries, caused by inappropriate footwear and poor gait when running or walking. These injuries can often be treated with a combination of orthotics, appropriate footwear and activity modification.

Our podiatrists, working closely with our physiotherapists, provide advice on appropriate footwear, core stability and stretching exercises, as well as prescribing orthotics.

Podiatric Surgery

Podiatric surgeons carry out a wide variety of foot and ankle surgical procedures and have additional post graduate training in all of the relevant medical and surgical disciplines.  All the podiatric surgeons working at St John and St Elizabeth hold NHS consultant posts.

Our podiatric surgeons work as independent consultants accepting GP referrals for people complaining of acute or chronic foot pain and deformit.  Treatments vary from conservative measures as listed above, to bone and soft tissue surgery,

We have a number of Podiatric Surgeons working in the Outpatient Consulting Rooms.
