The Lejeune Clinic for Children with Down’s Syndrome was one of the first clinics in the country to specialise in the assessment and treatment of children with Down’s syndrome. It provided unrivalled special assessment and advice that can improve all aspects of the child’s development.
The clinic offers its time and expertise as a complimentary service to the local NHS. For some parents it is the reassurance of a second opinion, for others it is a good indicator of which local services their child needs to access, for example remedial help for their weaker areas
At the Clinic
You and your child will see our medical team in three separate sessions taking up to three hours.
A Consultant Paediatrician will carry out a full medical examination including a case history and possibly a blood test. Parents will also have the opportunity to discuss any health issues which may be of concern.
A second Consultant Paediatrician will carry out a development assessment with the Griffith’s test (which uses toys). The doctor will then discuss the results with the parents and whether their child needs extra help e.g. physiotherapy.
The Speech and Language Therapist and the Occupational Therapist assess your child in their respective areas and make recommendations to improve these skills . Handouts will be given with ideas on how to help your child with the next stage of development.
All the clinic’s professionals write full reports with their recommendations, which are sent to parents, the GP and any other relevant professionals.
How to get an appointment
Phone or email the clinic to arrange an appointment and ask any questions. We run our clinics twice a month on Saturdays at the Hospital of St John & St. Elizabeth.
We do have a waiting list but give priority to new referrals and urgent reviews e.g. when a Statement of Special Education Needs review or appeal is pending.
