Falls & Blackout Clinic. Falls and blackouts are very common problems affecting a wide range of patients and constitute considerable cost to health services. Most blackouts are cardiac in origin and often the result of vaso-vagal syndrome or a primary arrhythmia – other cardiac causes also play a role including valvular complications, inherited syndromes and structural heart disease.
Although a cardiac aetiology is the most common, there are many neurological causes for blackouts and syncope. Epilepsy and TIAs are probably the most common causes of blackouts with neurological origin.
The aim of this rapid access clinic is to provide a fast track service where GPs can directly refer a patient to HJE for a one stop evaluation in cases where a patient has experienced falls, pre-syncope, syncope and blackouts (transient loss of consciousness). Please refer to flow chart for the Care Pathways. This service links in with Cardiology, Neurology and the Falls Management Programme.

We will always accommodate urgent requests on the day of referral but in most cases appointments are within 24 hours or to suit the patient.
The department requires all requests for investigations to be accompanied by a letter from a medical practitioner. These can be faxed directly to the department on Fax: 020 7806 4081 or you can bring it with you when you attend for your appointment.
The Department offers an open door service for patients referred for resting ECG’s. However, patients and clinicians are encouraged to book appointments wherever possible to encourage a smooth flow of work throughout the department with minimal delay to patients.
