At the centre of the Hospital is the Church of Saint John of Jerusalem. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, following the dedication of the Crusader Hospital in Jerusalem in the 11th century, which was served by the Knights Hospitallers, whose successors have been connected to the Hospital of Saint John and Saint Elizabeth since its foundation.
The Hospital continues today as a Catholic Hospital, and prayer is offered regularly in the Church for the patients and their families.
There are leaflets available in Church giving historical and other information.

Private Prayer
The Church is open all day and into the evening to patients, their families and clinical and nursing staff for private prayer and meditation, or simply for a moment’s peace and calm.
The ‘Angelus’ bell rings at noon and at 6pm, when Catholics customarily stop to say a prayer dedicating their day and their troubles into the hands of Our Lady. Everyone, of other religions or none, is encouraged to pause at this time and reflect on God’s mercy either in their own words or in silence.
Chaplaincy
There is a permanent Catholic chaplain present in the Hospital on a regular basis, to provide the Sacraments of Confession, Holy Communion and Anointing of the Sick, and spiritual direction and counselling to patients and their families.
To contact the Chaplain, please speak to the Ward Sister, or contact him directly:

Disabled Access
Because of its age, disabled access to the Church is not as convenient as we would wish, with steps at each door. There is a dedicated stair-walker for wheelchairs, and handrails at the entrance steps. If you need assistance to get into the Church for services or private prayer at any time, please ask the Porters at the Reception Desk - we are here to help you.
Concerts
There are regular concerts of sacred music in the Church which are held in aid of St John’s Hospice. While a donation is requested at the door from the public, access is free to all patients who wish to attend. The Church remains open for private prayer during the concerts. The programmes of the Concerts are available here www.saintjohnofjerusalem.blogspot.com and follow the link in the sidebar.
