All Consultants applying must hold or have recently held a substantive NHS consultant post and applications for practicing privileges are granted or rejected by the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC).

Appraisal and revalidation are important, separate, but related issues. Appraisal is at the core of re-validation cycle and the two processes are mandatory. If a practitioner decides that she/he does not wish to participate, then they will not be able to receive a license to practice at the end of their current re-validation cycle.
